Don’t look at the wrong data

NOTE: This post is old, and is probably on different subject matter than my current writing. It is possible the information is outdated or my opinions have changed. -- Josh Klein, May 28, 2012

When you collect a lot of data, there’s a nasty temptation to draw conclusions from it.

Judging from my analytics, do you think I should be focusing on satisfying my audience in Gibraltar or the Faroe Islands?

In a world where information is widely available and inexpensive to acquire, the most challenging task is to filter through it to figure out what’s important.

My advice: follow the money. Start with the way you measure profits and work backwards. It may feel good to see large numbers, but those hits on your website don’t pay the bills.
